Ever get frustrated that you are "trying hard" and "deserve" an A based on effort, but aren't getting it? Read this article.

Students in my classes sometimes complain that I grade "too hard" and that my rubric makes it tough to achieve an A. That is because an A should be hard to achieve! An A is not achieved through effort and fulfilling basic requirements - an A requires going above and beyond the basic requirements and doing something more than what is required.

If everyone got an A in my classes then it is no longer "above and beyond" - the effort and work you are doing then becomes the norm and therefore a C.

You WILL encounter this mindset in college, prepare for it now!

Submitting Assignments PDF Print E-mail

A refresher for everybody...

When you complete an assignment, your files must be saved in the following manner in order to be graded.

  1. Create a folder in your "Finished Projects" folder on your U: drive.
  2. Title it the name of the project.
  3. Place your ORIGINAL, UNALTERED, still with ALL THE LAYERS photoshop file (the one with the blue PS icon) into this folder. Do not lose this file!
  4. Open the .psd file in Photoshop.
  5. Open Image > Image Size
  6. Change the resolution to 72ppi (internet resolution).
  7. If ANY edge is greater than 10 inches, reduce it to 10 inches or smaller.
  8. Say "OK". Your file may appear to shrink in size. This is OK.
  9. Go to File > Save for Web & Devices.
  10. Select JPG High from the Preset box.
  11. Check to see if your file size is UNDER 100k.
  12. If it is, go to step 14.
  13. If it is not, switch the preset to JPG Medium, then try JPG Low. Go with the one that is UNDER 100k.
  14. Click "Save". It will ask you where to save it. It is making a NEW FILE. This file will not replace your .psd file.
  15. Name the new file your FIRST NAME ONLY. This will be the title of your image if it gets onto the class website.
  16. Save it into the project folder you created in Step 1.
  17. Close your file. DO NOT SAVE CHANGES.

To check your work, open your U: drive and make sure you have a folder named the project name, and that in that folder are two files (depending on the project you may have more). One file should be the original .psd file (blue icon) and the other should be the .jpg file (orange-ish icon) named your first name.

All other project files should go into this folder as well. For instance, if you wrote a critique then the Word document would also be in this folder.

Reminder PDF Print E-mail

A reminder -

Any student who shuts down/logs off of their computer or stops working no more than one minute before the bell rings will owe me five minutes at lunch for every one minute early he or she stopped working.

You have plenty of assignments. If you are done, I can easily give you more to do. However, if you are done, and everyone else still seems to have work to do, you are probably missing something somewhere.

Printing PDF Print E-mail

Printing options and prices are as follows:

HP Photosmart Inkjet (higher quality)
$1.50 for an 8.5 x 11
$ .75 for a 4 x 6
Paper is available in glossy (shiny) or matte.

Those of you who have paid your fee (and I have a record of it, or you provide me a receipt of it being paid) may start printing anytime. I will keep a record of the prints you make. While you have paid for $20 worth of prints, you can always pay more in the bookstore for additional prints, just bring me a receipt saying how much extra you paid on the day you want to print.

Procedure for printing:

- Let me know that you want to print at the beginning of class. I will let you know when you can print.

- Take your flash drive to the computer with the printer. Ask me which one if you do not know.

- Open the image you want to print in Photoshop. Go to File > Print, select the printer you want to print to (Photosmart). Adjust any options you want. You may want to consider selecting "Fit to Page", though depending on the ppi, it may lower the quality of the image.

- Hit print, then print again in the printer dialog box.

- GO BACK TO YOUR SEAT and wait a long, long, long time for the print to come out. I will bring it to you when it is done.

To fill a layer or selection with the background color, press Command/Ctrl+Delete.

Now to get really cool: To fill just the area with pixels, hold down the Shift key as well as the keys I mentioned above. This toggles the Preserve Transparency option. Press Shift+Backspace to open the Fill dialog box.
